"Why does this man speak like that?"

Posted by Gary Pauley in Sermons

Jesus healsHe could have been delusional. There have been plenty of people who really thought they were divine in one way or another!

He could have been a fraud.  There have been plenty of charlatans who fooled people into following them...and donating to their "cause"...

Bottom line...it is a good question.

It is the question asked by those who heard Jesus interact with the locals in Galilee. It is actually still a good question. Why did Jesus speak like that?

This Sunday, Mark 2:1-12.

Jesus the healer: a lesson in faithful ministry.

Posted by Gary Pauley in Sermons

Jesus' teaching was often met by demonic activity. On other occasions, he was met with opposition from the religious leaders of the day. Always opposition.

But he did not waver....didn't slow down...didn't run. He just kept at it, doing the "works" his Father gave him.

How do you keep going when doing right is met with difficulty? Sunday we consider the example of Jesus the healer. He was an amazing example of faithfulness in ministry.

Be with us Sunday. Mark 1: 29-45.

What is "good teaching"?

Posted by Gary Pauley in Sermons

That phrase gets bantered about quite a bit. Some love a good story teller. For some a good teacher makes everyone cry. To others, teaching is good if it makes you laugh!

This Sunday we look at a passage where Jesus' preaching came under the microscope. What did they say about his teaching? That is was...authoritative.

Is that what we look for today?  I rather doubt it. But like those days 2000 years ago, religious teaching had become an institution. It was traditional--a repetition of the same old ideas over and over again. Rabbi argued with Rabbi over the most minute points of interpretation. Then came Jesus.

This Sunday we look at the surprising teaching of Jesus...and why it matters to you and me.
