01.31.2010 | Mark: to serve & to give | The Humility of Greatness | Mark 9:30-37 |

We tend to think of greatness and humility as polar opposites... perhaps because of the kind of celebrities that we idolize. This must not be a new thing, because Jesus challenged the same thinking in His disciples. If they were to represent Him, they would have to adopt a new profile as leaders.

01.24.2010 | Mark: to serve & to give | The Dark Side of Lost | Mark 9:14-29 |

Pastor Gary Pauley. Does it bother you when movies portray good as barely more powerful than evil? It is true that evil has a terrible influence in the current state of creation. Man in his falleness and sinful condition thinks that he can just control evil in his own power, by his own moral authority or creativity. But that is foolish thinking, as Jesus shows us in this passage when He helps His disciples see that overcoming evil is a spiritual activity that demands the power of God.

01.17.2010 | Mark: to serve & to give | Seeing Jesus: the revealing | Mark 9:1-13 |

Pastor Gary Pauley. Experience with Jesus changed His followers. They would never be the same again. Jesus is revealing Himself clearly to His disciples, and specifically to the "inner core" of the disciple band. Today's disciples can look back and get the full picture. Have you come to see Jesus as He revealed Himself?

01.03.2010 | Mark: to serve & to give | Seeing Jesus: the cross | Mark 8:31-38 |

Pastor Gary Pauley. In this section of Mark's gospel we see Jesus working to reveal Himself fully to His disciples. In this first of three times He tells them explicitly of His coming death. Jesus gives four truths every disciple must understand about His work on the cross because understanding Jesus means understanding His death on the cross.

Monday, 07 December 2009

12.06.2009 |Mark: to serve & to give | Seeing Jesus: the confession | Mark 8:22-29 |

Pastor Gary Pauley. Before the disciples could really be disciples, they had to know who it was that they were following. Jesus pushes them on the subject asking them directly, "who do you say I am?" Jesus wants people to be clear on His identity. Jesus affirms Peter's answer to the question... an answer that forms the basis of the Christian faith.

11.29.09 | Mark: to serve & to give | Bread & Blindness: a light lunch and a heavy challenge | Mark 8:1-22 |

Pastor Gary Pauley. Lunch with Jesus. Seems everyone wanted to join up with Him. Huge crowds followed His ministry. It would take us a month just to plan for such a lunch! Jesus takes yet another opportunity to demonstrate for His followers His unique ability to fill any need... and the lesson went right over the heads of "the twelve". Jesus challenges their inability to "hear" Him...

Mark: to serve & to give | Bread, demons, and dogs: Jesus in Gentile lands | Mark 7:24-36 |

Missions is about reaching out to others outside of our community with the Gospel. Jesus modeled it by ministering to Gentiles... unheard of in Jewish strict religion of the day. Two episodes show Jesus challenging the apparent faith of a Gentile woman and presenting Himself as Lord to a deaf man.
