Jesus used the simplest and the most vulnerable people to teach them, and us, the proper frame of mind for participating in His kingdom. We must become like children, and we should not get in the way of children coming to Jesus.

Pastor Gary Pauley. Jesus was always being watched by religious leaders of His day. More than that... He was being tested by them. They wanted to trap Him - to take advantage of some error they hoped they could find in Him to bring Him down. But the tables were always turned. Jesus exposed the failure of religion in every category. In our passage today, He showed the inadequacy of religion to deal with the most basic of matters... the home.

The road to Jerusalem would serve as a moving classroom for Jesus to teach his disciples... to prepare them for ministry ahead. There was much ground to cover, from their attitude toward others in ministry to their attitudes regarding themselves. Their attitude towards others tended toward rejection, and their attitude towards themselves tended toward pride. Jesus tackles both problems head on and helps His disciples deal with them.

We tend to think of greatness and humility as polar opposites... perhaps because of the kind of celebrities that we idolize. This must not be a new thing, because Jesus challenged the same thinking in His disciples. If they were to represent Him, they would have to adopt a new profile as leaders.

Pastor Gary Pauley. Does it bother you when movies portray good as barely more powerful than evil? It is true that evil has a terrible influence in the current state of creation. Man in his falleness and sinful condition thinks that he can just control evil in his own power, by his own moral authority or creativity. But that is foolish thinking, as Jesus shows us in this passage when He helps His disciples see that overcoming evil is a spiritual activity that demands the power of God.
