Mark: to serve & to give | Blasphemy or Brotherhood? Mark 3:22-35

Monday, 06 July 2009

Mark: to serve & to give | Blasphemy or Brotherhood (Mark 3:22-35) |

Pastor Martin Burch. All through the gospel of Mark we have seen people form opinions about Jesus even as they followed in the wake of His ministry. Two very different choices about the person and work of Christ are presented in this passage. And they could not be more different! They are important for us to consider...

Mark: to serve & to give | The Servant's Controversies: self-righteous religion unmasked (Makr 2:23- 3:6) |

Pastor Martin Burch. Jesus was a figure of controversy. What is most interesting is that the biggest confrontations that erupted around Him came not from the irreligious, but from the leaders of the MOST religious people of His day. Obviously religion itself may not be all the God intended when it is entrusted into human hands. Jesus' own statements about what constitutes a proper understanding of God and His Word help fam how we are to represent His message to our culture. And it does us a great deal of good to analyze our own handling of the gospel in the light of those who were more concerned about religion than relationships with God and the people He created...

Mark: to serve & to give | Not the righteous, but sinners (Mark 2:13-22)

Mark: to serve & to give| Not the righteous, but sinners (Mark 2:13-22) |

Pastor Gary Pauley. It wasn't Jesus' teaching that shocked those who heard Him... it was His friends. He hung out with "sinners"! But this was absolutely consistent with His teaching and His mission. Is the way we act in relationship with people consistent with what we say we believe?

Mark: to serve & to give | The Servant Challenged (Mark 2:1-12)

Mark: to serve & to give | The Servant Challenged: a question of authority (Mark 2:1-12) |

Pastor Martin Burch. "Why does this man speak like that?" The religious leaders struggled with that thought when encountering Jesus in Capernaum. He could have been delusional. There have been plenty of people who really though they were divine in one way or another! He could have been a fraud. There have been plenty of charlatans who fooled people into following them... and donating to their "cause"... Bottom line... it is a natural question to ask. It is the question asked by those who heard Jesus interact with the locals in Galilee. It is actually still a valid question. Why DID Jesus speak like that? Because He is Lord... and as we will see, that makes His message the most important one to truly understand.

The Church & Me | {enclose 20090531.mp3}

Pastor Gary Pauley. This special heart to heart message to the Mill Creek Church family deals with some important questions:

  • How urgent is the work of the church?
  • Is your part in the church an optional thing?
  • What if the church weren't there?

Mark: to serve & to give | Not Like the Scribes: the authoritative teaching of Jesus (Mark 1:21-28)

Monday, 18 May 2009

Mark: to serve & to give | Not like the scribes: the authoritative teaching of Jesus (Mark 1:21-28) |

Pastor Gary Pauley. What makes really good teaching? For many, it's delivery... for others style, a sense of humor mixed in, a good vocabulary. Jesus' teaching shocked the people of his day. They were used to traditional teaching that had no punch... that offered no transforming truth. In this passage, we see not only why Jesus was a better teacher -- but why we need him so much... today!

Mark: to serve & to give | The Call (Mark 1:14-20)

Mark: to serve & to call | The Call (Mark 1:14-20) | {enclose 20090510.mp3}

Pastor Gary Pauley. Isn't "Twitter" a strange thing? It is an internet way of staying "up on" things that your friends are doing. If you sign up to read someone's updates, you are said to be "following them."

"Disciple" is a word used to describe those Jesus called to follow him. But this following was more than just keeping aware of his activities. It involved a dynamic relationship with him...a total trust and dependence. Followers of Jesus are still called disciples to this day.

Are you a disciple? What does it mean that you are following him? Is he accomplishing his purpose in your life as one of his followers? What is that purpose? These are some pretty basic questions for all of us who claim to be followers of Jesus.

To Serve & To Give: The gospel of Mark | The Beginning (Mark 1:1-13)

Sunday, 03 May 2009

To Serve & To Give | The Beginning (Mark 1:1-13) |

Pastor Gary Pauley. There are quite a lot of responses to Jesus today to the question of His identity. That is as true today as it was in His own time. It is clearly an important matter that Jesus wanted His disciples to nail down. How could they be His followers if they were uncertain as to who He really was? How can we? The picture of Jesus in the gospels is not confused. Mark begins by declaring Him to be the "Lord" of the Old Testament. The gospel ends with His resurrection. And in Mark, Jesus predicts His death and resurrection. This first sermon in a new series on the gospel Mark is the beginning of understanding the identity of Jesus.

Imperfect Parents: Parenting for the Rest of Us | selected scriptures

Pastor Martin Burch. For most of us, it was a parenting challenge just to get the family into the car for church this morning. We might read the latest Christian book on parenting and think it describes a family that could never be our own. Take a deep breath... there is hope... scripture does provide guidance to help us understand our families, and the job of raising good kids...

Two Responses to the Resurrection | Matthew 28

Two Responses to the Resurrection | Matthew 28 |

Patrick Walkinshaw, Wycliffe Bible Translators. We might be tempted to think that with the celebration of Easter a week behind us, we don't have to think about the significance of the resurrection of Jesus for another year. But nothing could be further from the truth. The reality of the resurrection motivated Jesus' original followers for their entire lives. And responses to it are still vital today. This message features an informal interview with Pat Walkinshaw, with Wycliffe Bible Translators. It includes information about the challenge of reaching the last bibleless people groups in our lifetimes...
